The Relationship Between Nutrition and Weight Gain

Examples of essential elements that are usually deficient in most people are the B-vitamins and the trace elements such as phosphorus, iodine, magnesium, and potassium. Many plants, animal tissues, and foods supply all or a partial amount of these nutrients.

A group of such nutrients that are considered important in heterotrophic nutrition are the macronutrients. Macronutrients include choline, cysteine, methionine, niacin, riboflavin, and thiamine. Some of the diseases that may be prevented through homotrophic nutrition include cardiovascular disease, colon cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, type II diabetes, kidney stones, and certain allergies.

Nutrition is also affected by the food habits and activities of a person. For example, it would be inappropriate to compare human nutrition with that of animals because humans are a different species from animals. But, human nutrition can be compared to that of plants in that both plant and animal nutrition are reliant on a number of factors including the location and the diet of the animals. Humans need an appropriate amount of carbohydrates, protein, fat, and minerals in order to survive. The main difference between animal nutrition and human nutrition is that human nutrition focuses more on the quality and balance of nutrients rather than the quantity.

The relationship between nutrient deficiency and the development of heart disease is very close. Studies have shown that some nutrients may lower the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. The relationship between nutrient deficiency and weight gain is not very clear and needs further studies. Although the relationship between nutrition and weight gain is very weak, it is important to mention that most people gain weight because they overeat, rather than due to a lack of adequate nutrition.
